Jack Nicholson, a god of the movie world and the academy's source for constatn memory masturbation, for reasons i know little for, stood before the many tuxes and over expensive dressses to say that Crash was dubbed 2005's best picture. If one were to watch my face one would think God himself pushed the slow motion button in my bubble. Shock, surprise, awe, ghastness, hatred, confusion, what the fuck. Out of the films nominated this year its obvious what was the best, brokeback mountain. Crash, to anyone who truly understands the art forms that put together a film, is the worst of the nominations. It's a supposed think piece on racism in America, that pushes for social change. The problem with this concept is that this idea, this need to say something is up front in center in every frame, ever word uttered by the confused cast. Save for Matt Dillon (whose character is the only one written with levels and intrigue) and possibly Terrance Howard (though his character was jumping on all ends of the emotional spectrum) the actors in Crash were lost in the daze that the named incident would cause. Paul Haggis' script, winner for Best Original Screenplay, is a weak scim over caricatures of humans. He spends no time on the characters so that the audience can get to know them, feel their pain, and understand their reactions. The audience is simply left to assume they should feel sorry for the characters becasue they aren't white. What we see on screen is an ADD stricken child reading through a 2000 page novel about life in LA and the repocutions of racism in America. The movie is ok, but compared to the massive praise it's received it is a horrible dissapointment. If you would like to see a great film on hatred and the nature of racism you must see American History X.
Crash's domination over best screenplay was obvious (even though The Squid and the Whale is a far superior script, and film [my personal best picture and best actor]) Crash's take of Best Picture is a sickly confused decision. What is happening in the Academy? Are you guys all sick or something?
On Phillip Seymour Hoffman's stranglehold of the Best Actor award i say this, Hoffman's performance is Superb on all counts, but i do hold personal frustration with the Academy's obsession with nominating actor's from Bio films. Yes there is an art and respect deserved for actors who successfully pull off becoming a real life person, but i will lways hold higher respect for the Actor who can create something wholly their own. My best actor pick is Jeff daniels for The Squid and the Whale, but from the nominees i say Heath Ledger.
fuckin wierd
